If upon opening your eyes you are surprised to find that your senses have not deceived you, it’s very likely that you have entered the world of Elisabeth Santana, founder of ES Blooms. A fullservice floral company, designing for clients in New York City and The Hamptons, ES Blooms has become a renowned purveyor of unique and powerful arrangements.
I recently interviewed Elisabeth as she was preparing for a blooming summer season, and below is our conversation.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, one of seven children. I grew up hearing stories about my Brazilian father and Slovakian mother’s early dating days dancing at Studio 54. Springtime was my favorite time of year, and I was thrilled to plant and grow my dahlias, zinnias, and tulips alongside the famed horticulturists at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.
We have international access to any flower imaginable. I am fascinated by the variety of flowers’ colors, scents, textures, and possible arrangements. Often, a vase inspires my aesthetic direction, or I spot an exquisite, seasonal flower that becomes my muse.
I am most inspired by the Japanese culture of minimalist elegance. Breaking everything down to the most basic floral units, and finding innovative ways to structurally enhance flowers’ natural beauty.
In 2014, I was hired to design for an 800-person gala at my alma mater, Poly Prep Country Day School. The event was at the historic Cipriani Wall Street, and Jon Bon Jovi headlined. Bon Jovi came early to rehearse, and for half an hour, I listened to an exclusive preview of his hit songs. Needless to say, it was a fantastic experience.
Edge, unique designs, and a great relationship with the client!
Bird of Paradise, the exotic flower used in my logo. It represents joyfulness, thoughtfulness, and love. My middle name is Joy, and I am naturally drawn to this flower’s vibrant colors.
With a stunning vase as our starting point, we can design flowers into a show-stopping piece. Additionally, same-flower groupings make an arrangement appear modern and opulent.
I have been partnering with St. Jude since 2016, and I’m thrilled to be designing for St. Jude Hope in the Hamptons Gala on July 15. I am planning a fun, interactive flower wall, with generous floral donations from several local farms.
Producing electronic music and mastering the sport of Polo with my love Michael Borrico.
